Why Would I Want an Electric Guitar?

If you want to really learn the art of playing a guitar, then you need to have one first. Of course, beginners always start with an acoustic guitar and then graduate to using an electric guitar. There are some people who start their beginner course straight from an electric guitar but it is always advised to start with an acoustic.

But the all important question is why you would really want an electric guitar in the first place. The answer is simple: It offers more options and the flexibility to experiment with different notes and you can blend the notes with different types of effects that can modify the tone or the pitch of an electric guitar.

One of the other advantages of buying an electric guitar is that you can use pickups for converting vibration of the strings into electrical current and amplify it to get the desired effect. These are the kinds of effects that are every guitar player’s dreams!

The out going signal produced by your guitar can be electrically altered to create different types of tonal effects even before you feed it into the amplifier. The final sound produced will have an acoustic or electrical tone to it. Most of the devices used for creating effects are external devices and they can add phase shift, equalization, distortion, and tremolo among many others.

The guitar more than ever before symbolizes the evolution of Rock but the truth is that an electric guitar can be used for different styles of music like jazz, country music, blues, new-age, alternative and even classical music. The ability to render music wide array of styles makes the guitar stand above many other string musical instruments. The distinctive sound produced by an electric guitar coupled with its ability to connect intimately to the player as well as the listener and this is how legends are born. The electric guitar comes with loads of attitude and when people see a lead guitarist contorting his body to play those high frequency distortion chords: they find a reason even in madness!

There are some hybrid electric guitars, which are fitted with piezoelectric pickups that can sense any mechanical vibration. Some of the electric guitars even have magnetic pickups that can prevent causing a micro phonic effect. The natural ability of magnetic pickups helps them to pick up different types of electromagnetic sounds or noises, which can be effectively used to produce a masterpiece. This is something impossible with an acoustic guitar.

Some of the advantages of an electric guitar over an acoustic one are:

1. Electric guitars are easier to play as compared to their acoustic cousin and in fact you can generate more variation in sound too. Unlike in an acoustic, an electric guitar will require an amplifier, and a guitar cable. There are a couple of buttons and knobs in the electric guitar that can help you to switch up and down the level of pitch and tone.

2. Electric guitars these days come with a Tremolo arm, volume and tone knobs and 3 single coil pick-ups. The tremolo arm is also known as vibrato bar or the whammy bar. It works like a lever and is attached to the guitars bridge. With the help of the tremolo arm you can tighten or slacken any of the strings, which will help you to change the pitch and create a vibrato effect.

All these put together produce the magical sound that you often hear and fall in love with while listening to Rock bands, heavy metal or even alternative. It is important to own an electric guitar because it will provide you with the freedom to experiment and above all churn out some really hot stuff!
