How to Play the Guitar

Any normal guitar whether an acoustic or electric has six strings and each of the strings relates to a different note value and is of a different size. The first thing you need to know about playing a guitar is how to hold it. Here’s a step-by-step approach to holding a guitar:

· First of all you need to find your self an armless chair. One of the important things to remember is that you need to feel comfortable and there should be a good support for your back. You should also have enough room to hold the guitar and move your arms around.

· The second step is to place your guitar in your lap. The back of the guitar should be facing inwards. The body of your guitar should rest on your leg but far away from the headstock. For right handed people, the headstock will be on your left side and the guitar will rest on your right leg.

· The guitar should be held in such a way that the thickest string or the 6th string should be right at the top.

· When you hold the frets or the fingerboard, your thumb should rest at the back of the guitar neck and thus it will be able to provide support to your hand while you play the strings.

· Grab a pick and place it between your thumb and the index finger and hold it securely.

· Now you are ready to play!

The next step in playing a guitar is tuning it. If you don’t tune the guitar then it will not give the right sound as is expected when you play a particular chord like A-minor or E-major. You need to tune the guitar on a regular basis to make it sound good always. Tuning a guitar involves adjusting the pitch of each of the 6 strings so that you can play the correct note. It shouldn’t be that you are playing G and the sound that comes out is that of E-minor. You can do the tuning through loosening or tightening of the tuning pegs. If you tighten the tuning pegs then it will increase the pitch of the string and if you loosen it then it will lower the pitch.

You can use different methods of tuning a guitar like using an electronic tuner. Electronic tuners can pick up the sound of any string and point out if you are playing the note too flat or too sharp. If you don’t have the budget to purchase an electronic tuner then you can also do it manually. The best way of manually tuning your guitar is through a method called relative tuning.

In relative tuning, you will have to place one of your fingers in the 5th fret in the 6th string and play a note. Now play an open 5th string. If the two notes are exactly the same then your guitar is in tune. If it is not then you can loosen or tighten the tuning peg till both the sounds are same. Then move on to the next string by placing your finger on the 5th fret in the 5th string and play the 4th string Open. Repeat this procedure till the top 4 strings are in tune. When you reach the 2nd string, place your finger on the 4th fret instead of the 5th of the 3rd string. For tuning the 1st string, you will have to again follow the procedure you used for all the 4 strings.

Once you have tuned the guitar, you are ready to play the notes.
