How to Play a Classical Guitar
To play the classical guitar well, you have
to follow the classical guitar technique, which is broadly
divided into sections meant for right handed and left handed
classical guitar enthusiasts. When you are playing a guitar
there are certain performance elements that will have to be
considered like the musical dynamics and tonal variations. But
before you get into the details of such elements, you need to
start with your posture.

If you don’t maintain the right posture
then playing the classical guitar can become extremely
difficult and excruciating. The classical guitar is normally
held over the left leg while the leg is supported by a foot
stool. You have to raise the guitar in such a way that it is
in a central position to your body. Some of the basic
considerations for determining a playing position are:
Stability
When we say,
stability, it refers to how stable the guitar is and how much
of free space you have around the guitar so that your hands
can move freely. If you try to play it in a tight space then
you might end up tensing your muscles, which will cause
frequent cramps in the long run apart from the fact that it
will not be easy to play the guitar.
Technique for the
right handed
In this technique, you
have to ensure that your thumb and the three largest fingers
of your right hand pluck or play the strings. The standard
position for this is where your hand will be in a position
that is similar to holding an apple. Your wrist should be bent
slightly and the forearm should rest on the large bout of your
guitar. Your fingers should be closer to the strings. Plucking
the strings also follow two different techniques and they are:
· Rest-stroke: In this technique the
finger plucking the string will rests on the next string
afterwards
· Free-stroke: In this technique the
finger will hit nothing after plucking. It will be free.
The rest-stroke normally produces a deliberate sound that
is good for creating a perfect harmony.
Nails
Practicing how to play
the classical guitar in the modern context requires the use of
nails more often. If you are right handed then you will be
using a combination of nails and the flesh on your fingertips
to pluck the strings. In the 19th century, some of the
greatest players of classical guitar like Francisco Tárrega,
Fernando Sor, and Emilio Pujol played the guitar using only
the flesh of their fingertip. Things have changed quite a lot
since then.
Strumming
Strumming is an
integral part of playing the classical guitar. In classical
guitar, you will have to strum using the back of your
fingernails in a sequence that will sound like a rapid strum.
There are different types of rasgueado/ strumming, which
employs a variety of combinations of the thumb and the
fingers. This helps in creating a wider variety of
subdivisions in the beat and rhythmical accentuations. You can
use three different combinations, which are:
· Using the palm-side or front side of
your thumb for strumming the strings lightly and thus
produce a soft sound.
· You can use your thumb nail to
produce a higher note sound.
· You can use a simple combination of
the thumb and the fingers in such a way that your thumb
strikes the lowest strings while your fingers pick the
higher strings in rapid succession.
It is not easy to master classical guitar
and will require dedication, patience and practice. |
